Phoenix, Tigers Open at 3-0
Germantown and Friends Select opened the league season on Tuesday, September 19th with the Tigers taking a 4-0 home win. After a scoreless first half, dominated by the hosts, Senior Tucker Wood opened the scoring for the Tigers in the 46th minute, assisted by classmate Marek Loder. Freshman Jason Symonette tallied an unassisted goal in the 65th minute. Sophomore Caleb Mactavish scored with an assist from senior Josh West in the 75th minute and freshman Manolo Sanchez closed out the scoring three minutes later on a head ball with an assist from Wood. Sophomore Zach Fernberger and junior Zach Porges shared the shutout in the goal.
Friends' Central took a 5-1 home win over Moorestown on Thursday, 9/21. Moorestown had a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute courtesy of a Phoenix own goal. But Dan Fedder tallied twice as did sophomore Ivo Milic and senior Sam Feldbaum had a goal and two assists.
A full slate of league games was played on Tuesday, September 26th. Germantown traveled to Abington and came home with a 3-0 victory. Junior Ben Gemberling-Johnson opened the scoring with a penalty kick goal in the 25th minute. Junior Owen Smith knocked in a rebound off a cross from classmate Matt Berson in the 48th minute. Symonette closed out the scoring in the 54th minute by knocking in a rebound off a shot by junior David Marvin. Fernberger was in goal for the shutout.
ANC and George played to a 1-1 overtime tie in Bryn Athyn. After a scoreless first half, the Lions lit the scoreboard first in the 67th minute courtesy of a Cougar own-goal. A minute later the visitors tallied at the other end on a 25- yard direct kick from senior Ibrahima Patrick. Both teams had close calls after that, but none that went in.
Central continued their goal-scoring binge with a 7-0 road win at Select. Feldbaum led the way with two goals and an assist. Milic opened the scoring and Feldbaum added one for a 2-0 halftime lead. Pier Granoff, Mike Dohrman, Matt Bernstein and Eric Goldwein tallied before Feldbaum closed out the scoring for the day. Pete Liebman and Mike Pasek shared the shutout in goal.
Shipley also tallied seven times (four by junior Dan Mayernick) in a 7-2 home win over Moorestown. The Gators took a 5-0 halftime lead on goals by freshman Dalton Carroll in the 12th minute, Mayernick in the 20th minute (assist from senior BJ Glenn), Mayernick again in the 30th minute, senior Dave Bartholomew in the 35th minute, and Mayernick again in the 37th minute. Glen scored in the 50th minute, before the Foxes tallied twice within 30 seconds in the 62nd minute. Mayernick closed out the scoring for the day in the 73rd minute.
On Friday, September 29th Germantown posted its third consecutive shutout with a 3-0 home win over ANC. The Tigers wasted no time, scoring in the 5th minute when senior Max Wheeling's shot caromed off the goal post and the keeper right to Gemberling-Johnson who knocked it home. In the 25th minute Symonette tallied after a cross from Berson. Gemberling-Johnson netted the final goal on an impressive solo effort in the 35th minute. Fernberger and Porges again shared the shutout.
Friends' Central continued its winning ways in the league with a 1-0 home win over George School. The Phoenix outshot the Cougars 25-6, but only a 46th minute shot by Feldbaum crossed the goal line. Moorestown also won 1-0, topping visiting Abington, while Westtown beat Select 5-3.
Friends' Central was to have visited Germantown on Tuesday, October 3rd in a battle of unbeatens, but that game has been rescheduled to Saturday, October 14th to be played under the lights on LaSalle University's turf field.
