SHIPLEY WINS CHAMPIONSHIP IN FIRST SEASON;

TOPS FRIENDS' CENTRAL 1- 0

Shipley needed two road wins to win the championship in their first year in the league and did so with a 3-1 semifinal win at Germantown Friends on Tuesday, November 1st and a 1-0 victory over 1st seed Friends' Central in the championship game played on Thursday, November 3rd. Junior BJ Glenn tallied for the Gators shortly before halftime and then he and his teammates held their breath as the Phoenix missed on a penalty kick which would have tied the score in stoppage time of the first half. Shipley held on for the shutout behind the goalkeeping of senior Joe Kenney who had 9 saves and was helped by senior defender Sam Malcolm who headed away a sure goal which had gotten past Kenney.

Glenn also scored and had an assist in the semifinal game against Germantown where the visitors went out to a 2-0 halftime lead (on a goal from play and a penalty kick) only to see the Tigers roar back behind a goal from season and career FSL scoring leader senior Mbizo Mzamane assisted by junior Marek Loder and a near miss on a head ball off a direct play which would have tied the score. Shortly thereafter Shipley iced the win on a play developed off a direct kick at midfield. Senior co-captains Caleb Balderston and Nick Fatula were Shipley's other scorers. Friends' Central easily handled Abington Friends in the other semifinal, 5-0, after escaping with a 1-0 win against the 'roos in the final week of the regular season. Junior Sam Feldbaum had a pair of goals, while seniors Tom Vail, Alex McElroy and Zach Malet each scored one. Senior Galen Guindon contributed three assists, while classmate Deitrich Brubaker and sophomore Dan Fedder each helped on one goal.

Phoenix Unbeaten; Shipley, GFS and Select Each With 3 Wins

Friends' Central has opened the defense of their 2004 title with a pair of 1-goal victories, followed by two shutouts to start the season at 4-0. On Friday, September 23rd the Phoenix hosted Germantown and took a 1-0 win in a game with few offensive chances. Central had the better of the midfield play for the most part and used an early second-half goal by senior Alex McElroy (with an assist from classmate Galen Guindon) and the shutout keeping of Zach Weimar to secure the win. The Phoenix followed with a road win at Moorestown, 2-1, on Tuesday, September 27th. Goals came in the 12th minute from senior Tom Vail (assist to McElroy) and in the 13th minute from McElroy (assist to senior Drew Erickson). Also on the 27th Shipley played its first ever FSL game and took home a 2-1 overtime win against George School. Junior David Bartholomew netted both goals for the Gators without benefit of assists. His first score came in the 57th minute, and then after the Cougars had knotted the score he tallied the game-winner 6 minutes into the first overtime period. The Phoenix traveled out the Main Line on Saturday, October 1st and handed Shipley a 2-0 defeat. McElroy scored in the 7th minute from Erickson and Vail tallied in the 49th minute with an assist from Weimar. They followed that with a 5-0 blanking of ANC on October 11th. Junior Josh Aichenbaum opened the scoring in the 4th minute and Guindon netted a penalty kick in the 16th minute. Vail, junior Sam Feldbaum and Guindon each scored in the second half.

GFS hosted George in an early season opener on Friday, September 16th. The Tigers dominated the play and had numerous scoring chances, but only found the net twice. Junior Henry Robb scored directly on a corner kick in the 33rd minute and senior Mbizo Mzamane tallied in the 43rd minute with assists from senior Brian Pepe-Mooney and junior Teo Zuares. Senior keeper Nate Gemberling-Johnson was in goal for the shutout. On the 23rd host Abington and Westtown played to a 1-1 tie. Also on the 23rd host Moorestown blanked ANC 2-0. Senior Aaron Grossman tallied both goals for the Foxes in the 27th and 60th minutes (the latter on a header off a rebound from the keeper). Senior Shawn Stutz stopped 4 shots for the shutout in a game with some pressure back and forth where Moorestown finished their opportunities and ANC did not. In the most noteworthy game played on the 23rd Friends Select traveled to George school and beat the Cougars 2-1. It was the Falcons first league win since 10/18/2001 (2-0 over GFS) and only their second since 1998 (1-0 over FCS on 10/22/98). The Falcons also ended an even longer streak, as this was their first win over George School since the inaugural year of the league, 1981, when they blanked the Cougars 4-0 on 10/9/81. There were scoreless ties in 1984 and 1985, but otherwise George has had Select's number for more than two decades.

GFS visited Select in Fairmount Park on the 27th and spotted the hosts an early goal by Alex Winthrop four minutes into the game, before storming back to a 3-1 halftime lead on the way to a 5-1 victory. Junior Marek Loder opened the scoring for the Tigers in the 8th minute with an assist from Zuares and then scored again in the 35th minute with an assist from sophomore Ben Gemberling-Johnson. Senior Alex Fernberger scored just before halftime, converting a rebound off the post from a shot by Mzamane. Second half goals came from Zuares (with assists from Mzamane and Fernberger) and Mzamane with assists from Ben Gemberling-Johnson and substitute keeper Zach Porges.

On September 29th host Abington held off Shipley for a 1-0 win, while on the 30th Select made a successful journey across the Delaware to beat Moorestown 4-1. On October 4th Westtown notched their first win of the season, 2-1 over ANC. Westtown opened the scoring in the 34th minute when senior Sung Kyu Hahn finished a loose ball after a corner kick. Junior Ian Reitman netted a 49th minute goal for the winners with an assist from senior Sesooter Ikpah. ANC pulled to within one with a goal in the 75th minute from senior Ivan Asplundh assisted by junior Doug Keith. Two days later Westtown visited Select in Fairmount Park and lost to the Falcons 1-0. This was another streak-breaker for Select which had not defeated Westtown since 1986 (there was a tie in 2001). Also on Thursday, October 6th Abington kept ANC out of the win column with a 3-2 road victory. The 'roos opened the scoring in the 26th minute when senior Rob Armstrong blocked a clearance and deflected it into the goal. Sophomore Adam Wirtshafter put Abington up 2-0 in the 34th minute. The Lions came back with a 47th minute breakaway goal by Asplundh with an assist from freshman Chris Hyatt. Senior Mike Conboy knocked in a rebound off the ANC keeper in the 71st minute for what proved to be the winning goal as junior Doug Keith scored in the 79th minute to pull ANC to within one goal, but without enough time to even the match.

On Friday, October 7th host Germantown had a 1-0 lead (Mzamane in the 32nd minute) over Shipley with less than 5 minutes to play when junior David Bartholomew scored twice for the Gators, once on a direct kick and the game winner on a floater to shock the Tigers and tighten the playoff race.

Games on the 11th of October saw George and Westtown play to a scoreless draw, while host Germantown beat Abington 5-2. Senior Jack Meigs opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a header off a throw-in from Fernberger. Mzamane then took over, scoring 2 goals in each half with assists coming from junior Tucker Wood, two from Pepe-Mooney and one each from senior Zach Barrett and Zuares. Abington's goals came in the second half from Brian Burke and Andrew Mason. Also on the 11th visiting Shipley blanked Moorestown 5-0 with Bartholomew netting a hat-trick and BJ Glenn and Todd Herman each tallying once. Assists came from sophomore Nikhil Gregg and senior Caleb Balderston

The Westtown-Friends' Central game scheduled for 9/30 is rescheduled for 10/24, while the Moorestown-George School game originally on 10/7 is now set for 10/27.
