FRIENDS’ CENTRAL WINS 1-0 FOR FIRST TITLE SINCE 1989

On Tuesday, November 2nd host Friends’ Central scored a 3rd minute goal and then held off defending champion George School for 77 minutes to win their first boys’ soccer title in 15 years and fourth overall.  Tom Vail put a wide pass to Zach Malet who beat a fullback and chipped a ball to the back post, just brushing the keeper’s hand on the way to dropping into the goal.  In a game with plenty of action in midfield, Phoenix keeper Dan Kaufman recorded 15 saves for the shutout, playing through a 65th minute injury.

In semifinal action on Saturday, October 30th Friends’ Central beat visiting Westtown 3-1, while the host Cougars topped Germantown 2-1 in a replay of last year’s championship contest.  The Tigers had the better of the play in the first half against George, but a fine save by keeper Alex Dettmer on a shot from Mbizo Mzamane kept the game scoreless at the break.  Senior Mike Bernardini opened the scoring with a solo effort in the 55th minute capped by a hard shot to the near post.  Ten minutes later a Tiger hand ball resulted in a penalty kick and a second goal for Bernardini.  Germantown responded with a head ball goal by senior Nick Malinowski off a throw from junior Alex Fernberger, but could not tally the equalizer.

In the other semifinal the Phoenix jumped ahead with a first minute goal by sophomore Josh Aichenbaum with an assist from Vail.  Westtown knotted the score just before half on a breakaway by senior Robert LaManna.  In the second half junior Galen Guindon scored in the 60th minute off a set piece by Ben Schutzman.  Guindon added an insurance goal on a penalty kick in the 75th minute.
