GEORGE SCHOOL WINS 12th TITLE 2-0 OVER FRIENDS' CENTRAL

George School scored at each end of the second half to take their second straight title (12th overall) with a solid 2-0 win over visiting Friends' Central on Tuesday, October 30th. After a scoreless first half in which the Phoenix had the better of the play, including a particularly dangerous chance in the 35th minute, the hosts were awarded a corner kick in the very first minute of the second stanza. Senior John Stevens hit a high looping ball to the far post where classmate Mike Millner headed it in. Play went back and forth after that, with Friends' Central having another great chance in the 53rd minute, forcing Cougar senior keeper Corey Spells to make a sensational diving save on a ball ticketed for the upper right-hand corner. The Phoenix had another good chance on a head ball in the 64th minute, followed by two good chances for the Cougars in the 70th and 71st minutes. Finally, senior Matthias Engel dribbled past a defender and scored from about 15 yards out in the 75th minute to ice the win. Spells had 7 saves to insure the shutout.

Both finalists won their Saturday semifinal games by 2-1 scores. George topped Germantown in a very well played and exciting contest to avenge a 1-0 regular season defeat. Play was scoreless in the first half with Germantown having a bit the better of the action. The second half continued with even end-to-end action, but still without scoring through 65 minutes. The Tigers' senior co-captain Dan Hershberg finally broke the ice on a 30 yard left footed shot which Spells got his fingertips on, but could not keep out of the goal. Seven minutes later the hosts knotted the score as sophomore Erik Lowell scored off a corner kick from senior Josh Mandell. With three minutes left it appeared as if the Tigers had scored the game-winner. A throw deep in the Cougar's defensive zone was flicked on to Hershberg at the far post where he knocked it past Spells, but the linesman had his flag up for off-sides. George took the free kick and brought play all the way to the other end, where, with about one minute left in regulation time, they were awarded another corner kick. Mandell this time found senior John Stevens who knocked in the winning goal to cap a roller coaster of emotions for both sides. At ANC, Friends' Central scored twice early and then held off the hosts to come away with a 2-1 decision, after a scoreless regular-season result. Phoenix senior Alex Sokolov tallied in the 4th and 13th minutes with assists from Andy White and Mirza Fralic. ANC senior Ben Schrock scored to bring the Lions to within one goal in the 47th minute with an assist from classmate Brandon Asplundh. The hosts could get no closer, though, as Friends' Central assured its first championship appearance since its undefeated 1989 league campaign.

ANC TAKES OVER FIRST PLACE WITH THREE WINS

ANC capped a strong 8-day stretch in which they went 3-0 with a home field 3-0 victory on Wednesday, October 10th over previously unbeaten Germantown. The Lions completely outplayed the Tigers, scoring in the 8th, 60th, and 71st minutes. Senior Jason Hyatt opened the scoring with an assist from classmate Brandon Asplundh. Junior Luke Childs doubled the lead with an unassisted effort and freshman Thayer Damm iced the win with an assist from junior Jason Walter. Senior Lane Genzlinger turned away three shots for the shutout.

On Tuesday, October 9th host George School topped Friends' Central 2-1. After a scoreless first half which saw both teams miss point-blank opportunities, the Cougars opened the scoring in the 42nd minute when senior Kyle Erickson headed in a corner kick from classmate Josh Mandell. Junior Warren Richards evened the score with a 46th minute penalty kick for the Phoenix. Sophomore Jamey Stevens knocked in a ball at the back post for the game-winner in the 70th minute after a give-and-go between freshman Alex Artaki and sophomore Shawn DeAngelo. The Phoenix had greater posession, but the scoring chances were even in a very closely contested game. Also on the 9th host Abington edged Moorestown 1-0. Sophomore Josh Simon netted the only goal about 20 minutes into the first half. Junior Brian Spiewak had the assist. Sophomore Ben Roller recorded the shutout with 6 saves for the 'roos who were outshot by the Foxes 15-7 but held on for the win. The final game on the 9th resulted in a 1-1 tie between Westtown and host Friends Select. After a scoreless first half, the Falcons tallied first on a goal in the 50th minute by Daniel Samai. Westtown evened the score in the 74th minute on a goal from senior David Whartnaby with an assist from junior Tris MacDonnell.

On October 5th visiting Westtown beat Abington 3-2 and host George School blanked Friends Select 3-0. Whartnaby opened the scoring for Westtown in the 10th minute with an assist from classmate Obinna Nwosu. The 'roos knotted the score in the 25th minute on a goal by junior Chris Hood with an assist from classmate Mike Cohen. A Kevin Bosch (freshman) penalty kick in the 30th minute and a Robert Evans (senior) breakaway goal just before halftime increased the host's lead to 3-1. Junior Stuart Rhodes netted a penalty kick in the second half but although they had some good chances, Abington could get no closer than 3-2. George School scored goals in the 6th, 58th and 64th minutes in their shutout of the Falcons. Senior Mike Millner opened the scoring directly off a corner kick. Classmate John Stevens netted the final two goals on a penalty kick and a scramble. Senior Corey Spells made four saves for the shutout.

On October 4th Damm led visiting ANC to a 4-0 win over Moorestown with assists on all of the goals. On the receiving end of the assists were Asplundh in the 6th and 48th minutes, Hyatt in the 40th minute and Walter in the 53rd minute. Genzlinger had 4 saves for the shutout.

In an October 2nd showdown for first place at that time, host Germantown rode a 7th minute goal to a 1&emdash;0 win over George School. The Tigers goal came from sophomore Nate Geller with an assist from junior Jeff Stern. The Tigers had the better of the play in the first half, but the Cougars came storming back in the second half only to be denied every time by the home defense (and a couple of posts) led by sophomore keeper Andy Soprano who stopped a penalty kick and a point blank shot from 10 yards out. Also on the 2nd visiting Moorestown topped Westtown 2-1 in overtime. Westtown junior Andrew LaManna opened the scoring in the first half, only to have Moorestown even the match just before the half on a goal by senior Matt McMahon assisted by classmate Steve Ellis. There was no scoring in the second half, thanks in part to senior Fox keeper Matt Stevens stopping a penalty kick. The winning goal for the Foxes came four minutes into the first overtime. Also in overtime on the 2nd, host ANC topped Abington 3-2. The Lions scored in the 32nd and 33rd minutes on goals by Asplundh assisted by Walter and Hyatt assisted by Asplundh. The 'roos roared back (if kangaroos can roar) with unassisted goals in the 64th minute by Hood and in the 66th minute by Simon. Asplundh scored the game-winner in the 6th minute of OT with an assist from senior Ben Schrock. The final game on 10/2 was a 1-0 home victory for Friends' Central over Friends Select.

TIGERS AND COUGARS OPEN AT 2-0

George School and Germantown Friends each gained wins in their first two FSL games and will meet on Tuesday, October 1st at GFS to determine early sole possession of first place. The Cougars opened on Friday, September 21st with a 3-0 home win over Westtown. The game was scoreless at the half but an injury to Westtown’s stopper aided the home cause in the final 40 minutes. Senior Gabe Tilove opened the scoring for the Cougars in the 45th minute off a throw from classmate Josh Mandell. Senior John Stevens tucked in a 74th minute cross from his sophomore brother Jamie. Tilove finished the scoring by knocking in a loose ball in the 76th minute. Seniors Mike Millner and Corey Spells combined for the shutout with 6 saves.

Also on the 21st, host ANC tied Friends’ Central 1-1. Lion senior Jason Hyatt scored in the 14th minute with an assist from classmate Ben Schrock. Five minutes later Phoenix junior Warren Richards evened the score on an unassisted 30 yarder over the keeper. The score remained 1-1 through overtime thanks in part to a diving save by Lane Genzlinger on a Richards shot to the far post. Host Germantown also went to overtime on the 21st, but came away with a 1-0 decision over Moorestown on a goal by senior Dan Hershberg with an assist from sophomore Nate Geller. Sophomore Andy Soprano notched the shutout. The final game of the first round was a 2-0 road win for Abington over Friends Select. Junior Chris Hood scored both goals for the ‘roos, a first-half goal assisted by classmate David Hoyle and a second-half penalty kick. Ben Roller made 3 saves to preserve the shutout.

On September 28th George traveled to Moorestown and handed the Foxes their second consecutive OT defeat, this time by a 3-2 score. The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 first-half lead with goals in the 19th and 22nd minutes. Mandell opened the scoring with assists from Tilove and Millner. John Stevens hit the second goal with assists from senior Nick Dawitt and freshman Alex Artaki. Steve Ellis brought the hosts to within one with a 54th minute goal with an assist from junior Matt McMahon. McMahon forced overtime with an unassisted goal 45 seconds from the final whistle. Tilove just beat the whistle at the end of the first overtime with a 25 yarder assisted by Dawitt. The Foxes had a few chances in the second OT, but couldn’t finish. Germantown topped host Westtown 2-1, also on the 28th. The Tigers opened the scoring in the 5th minute on an unassisted goal by sophomore Max Samuel. Geller flicked a left-footed goal past the keeper in the 45th minute with an assist from junior Alex Feldman to double the margin, thus insuring that a 78th minute Westtown goal from David Whatnaby did not create another overtime contest.

The two other games on the 28th were shutouts, with host ANC topping Friends Select 2-0 and host Friends’ Central playing Abington to a 0-0 draw. Hyatt again scored for the Lions on a 49th minute direct kick from just outside the penalty box. In the 65th minute a Hyatt indirect kick came loose in the box where freshman Johan Steiner tapped it to classmate Thayer Damm who netted the insurance goal. Genzlinger had 5 saves for the shutout. Details on the Abington &emdash; Friends’ Central game will appear in the next Newsletter.
