GFS Quartet Claims Championship of America Distance Medley Title

Germantown Friends placed first among 15 teams in the prestigious COA distance medley race at the Penn Relays on April 25th. The Tigers posted a time of 10:11.54 to easily win the race by 5 seconds over LaSalle College High School. Senior Isaac Ortiz led off with a 3:07.6 in the 1200 m. leg. He passed the baton to sophomore Tom Waterman who ran a 52.6 400 m. leg before handing off to senior Jake McKenzie who ran a 1:56.4 800 m. Senior Max Kaulbach took the baton in third place, but soon outdistanced the field as he ran the 1600 m. final leg in 4:15.1. The time was the fourth fastest in the country this year and gave the Tigers their third Penn Relays "wheel", but their first in a qualifying required, non-heat race.
