Germantown Friends senior Max Kaulbach continued his outstanding indoor track season by winning the 2-mile race at the NISC meet held at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City. On Sunday, March 16 Kaulbach ran the distance in 9:02.65, fifth fastest in the nation this year, and a new all-time PA record. On Saturday, 3/15 Kaulbach anchored the Tigers' 4X1 mile relay team in a time of 4:16.43 to secure third place in a very fast race. The Tigers' time of 17:34.25 is an all-time PA record and the 10th fastest in US history. Isaac Ortiz ran the first leg in in 4:24.17. Gus McKenzie followed with a 4:27.72 and handed off to his brother Jake who ran 4:25.64. The third place finish yielded All-America status for the four runners. Kaulbach garnered the honor again for his win on Sunday.
Also competing in the NISC were Ivo Milic-Strkalj from Friends' Central who ran 4:24.1 (20th place) in one heat of the mile on Sunday, while Ortiz ran in a different heat and finished in 4:24.95 (21st). Jake McKenzie finsihed finished 15th in the 2-mile in 9:34.69, while Patrick DeSabato (FCS) finished 27th in 9:56.15. Other GFS runners competed on Friday with Ross Wistar (47th) and Fenn Hoffman (60th) placing in the 5K and a young quartet placing 25th in the DMR.
At the PA state meet Kaulbach led a contingent of three Friends Schools League runners in the top 8 places in the mile run at Penn State on Saturday, March 1st. Kaulbach won the race with a time of 4:15.80, earning him all-state honors. Following Kaulbach were Ortiz in 6th place with a time of 4:24.65 and Milic-Strkalj in 8th place at 4:27.09. Kaulbach's mile time was the fastest in Pennsylvania this year and the 15th fastest in the nation. In a remarkable double, Kaulbach placed third in the 3000 meter run (8:37.45) after his mile victory. Also placing in the 3K were Jake McKenzie in 6th place (8:48.83) and DeSabato in 18th place (9:05.13). GFS also took a 7th place in the distance medley relay and finsihed in 5th place in the final team standings.
