PHOENIX AND TIGERS UNDEFEATED; TUCKER REACHES 1000

 

On Tuesday, January 29th visiting Westtown used a 22-8 second quarter surge to overcome a 4 point deficit on the way to a 73-58 win at ANC. Senior Ethan Wells led the winners with 21 points, while Julian Rosario (15), Chris Beesley (14) and David Whartnaby (11) also reached double figures. Blake Synnestvedt led the Lions with 15, while Ben Mansbach (12) and Josh Junge and Johann Steiner (10 each) also contributed. Also on the 29th visiting George School outscored Select 35-10 in the middle two quarters on the way to a 60-25 win. Jeff Stewart led the Cougars with 1, while Mike Millner added 13. Benji Serinsky and Muhammed Carr each had 7 for the Falcons.

On Saturday, January 26th host Abington beat Westtown 70-53. The winners were led by junior John Owens with 26 points (10-14 from the line) and Rob Fusaro with 24 (3 baskets from behind the arc). Westtown’s Wells led all scorers with 33, while Whartnaby added 11.

On Friday the 25th Germantown topped Westtown 77-66 at GFS, taking the lead with a 24-7 second quarter surge. The Tigers were led by junior Jason Tucker with 25 points (13-18 from the line, 0-5 then 13-13) and freshman Noel Wilmore with 23 (including 13 in the second quarter). Senior Zach Perch added 10 for the hosts. Whartnaby led the visitors with 28 (4 threes) and Wells added 18. Also on the 25th visiting Abington jumped out to a 25-10 first quarter lead on the way to a 73-45 win over Select. Owens again led the ‘roos with 25, while Will Gause and Aron Cohen added 11 points each. Serinsky led the Falcons with 16. The third game on the 25th saw host George School come back from an early deficit to top ANC 66-41. The Cougars tied the score at the end of the 3rd quarter and then blanked the Lions for the final 8 minutes. Rashid Santiago (18), Stewart (17) and John Stevens (15) led the Cougars, while the Lions were paced by Mansbach with 15 and Synnestvedt with 12 (4 threes). The final game on the 25th was a 92-34 Friends’ Central win over visiting Moorestown. The Phoenix placed four players in double figures (Mike Cook-22, Mustafa Shakur-20, Shejdie Childs-12, and Jason Polykoff-10.) Moorestown was paced by Matt Spuler and Jeff Wilson each with 14.

On Tuesday the 22nd host George School fell to Friends’ Central 64-48. Shakur with 20 and Cook with 18 led the Phoenix, while Stewart (16), Dan Titus (10) and Sang-Rea Han (10) paced the Cougars. Also on the 22nd Moorestown topped the visitors from Bryn Athyn 44-36. Wilson led the Foxes with 16, while Adam Childs topped the Lions scoring with 12.

On Friday the 18th host Abington opened a 17-7 first quarter lead over George School and held on for a 66-57 win. The ‘roos were led by Owens with 28 and Fusaro with 26 (5 threes). The Cougars were paced by Santiago with 21 (4 threes) and Stevens with 11. Also on the 18th Germantown topped host ANC 76-38. The Tigers were again led by Tucker (16), Wilmore (13) and Perch (10). The Lions were paced by Johann Steiner with 11. The third game on the 18th saw host Moorestown top Select 50-35. Wilson again led the Foxes with 17, including 5 threes, all in the second quarter. Serinsky paced the Falcons with 14. The final contest on the 18th went to visiting Friends’ Central over Westtown 78-59. Wells with 28 and Whartnaby with 21 again led the hosts.

On Tuesday the 15th visiting Abington defeated Moorestown 63-46. Owens, Fusaro (5 threes) and Gause led the way for the ‘roos with 22, 17 and 11 respectively. Matt Stevens paced the Foxes with 14.

In opening round action on Friday, January 11th host Friends’ Central beat ANC 72-34. Cook, Childs and Polykoff led a balanced Phoenix attack with 12,10 and 10 respectively. Mansbach topped the Lions with 10. Also on the 11th visiting Westtown downed Select 66-38. Wells with 27 and Whartnaby with 25 (10 for 3 from the stripe) led the winners, while Serinsky with 19 (7 for 8 on the line) led the Falcons. The third game on the 11th saw host George School put together a 22-13 4th quarter surge to pull away from a tie game after three periods and defeat Moorestown 54-45. The hosts were led by Stevens with 22 and Santiago with 17. Wilson led the Foxes with 17, while Alvin Minatee added 10. The final game on the 11th was a real barn-burner with host Germantown coming back from 7 points down with 59 seconds remaining in the contest to top Abington 75-74. The Tigers scored the final 8 points of the game, capped by a Tucker basket and free throw with less than 5 seconds left. A desperation three by the ‘roos at the buzzer just missed. The visitors set the stage for the last-second heroics by missing all 8 of their free throws during the final minute. Tucker led the Tigers with 31, including 18 in the 4th quarter and his 1000th career point on a 2nd quarter free throw, while Wilmore added 19. Will Gause led all scorers with 33, while Fusaro added 17 and Owens 14 for the ‘roos.
